About Marble

Marble is a luxurious surface formed from limestone, lending warmth and elegance to kitchens, bathrooms, home bars and other living spaces. Our customers at Great Lakes Granite & Marble love it for its subtle color variations and beauty, which create a uniquely classic look. Marble contains rich crystals, and comes in such shades as white, cream, charcoal, green and rose. Once cost prohibitive to many budgets, advancements in technology have led to increased availability. Now, this beautiful material is more accessible at a lower cost.

Care & Maintenance

The key to keeping marble countertops gorgeous and looking fresh is prevention: Place heat-resistant pads under hot dishes, use coasters for glasses and never cut directly on the surface. Also, wipe up any spills right away, as marble is susceptible to etching from acids and stains from other substances. On a daily basis, wipe marble with a soft cloth and warm water, using a mild cleanser if necessary. It’s recommended that you purchase a cleaning product specifically formulated for marble. This surface should be sealed periodically to keep it in good shape. All marble surfaces can be re-polished in your home to restore them to a new look at any interval you wish.

Countertop Comparisons

When comparing different countertop materials, we recommend weighing the pros and cons of each. Like granite, marble is made of natural, genuine stone. Each slab is unique, especially in terms of the beautifully colored veining throughout the material. Marble comes in many different colors, so there are endless options and patterns to suit your design style.

Marble is more porous than quartzite, quartz or granite, so it requires a quality sealer to reduce stains. Plus, the minerals that comprise marble are sensitive to certain chemical agents, so spills must be cleaned immediately. Still, marble also ages beautifully, creating an elegant patina.
